Instant Recognition of Half Integrality and 2-Approximations

چکیده
We deene a class of integer programs with constraints that involve up to three variables each. A generic constraint in such integer program is of the form ax + by z + c, where the variable z appears only in that constraint. For such binary integer programs it is possible to derive half integral superoptimal solutions in polynomial time. The scheme is also applicable with few modiications to nonbinary integer problems. For some of these problems it is possible to round the half integral solution to a 2-approximate solution. This extends the class of integer programs with at most two variables per constraint that were analyzed in HMNT93]. The approximation algorithms here provide an improvement in running time and range of applicability compared to existing 2-approximations. Furthermore, we conclude that problems in the framework are MAX SNP-hard and at least as hard to approximate as vertex cover. Problems that are amenable to the analysis provided here are easily recognized. The analysis itself is entirely technical and involves manipulating the constraints and transforming them to a totally unimodular system while losing no more than a factor of 2 in the integrality.

On The Integrality Gap of Directed Steiner Tree Problem
In the Directed Steiner Tree problem, we are given a directed graph G = (V,E) with edge costs, a root vertex r ∈ V , and a terminal set X ⊆ V . The goal is to find the cheapest subset of edges that contains an r-t path for every terminal t ∈ X. The only known polylogarithmic approximations for Directed Steiner Tree run in quasi-polynomial time and the best polynomial time approximations only ac...
متن کاملIntegrality gaps of semidefinite programs for Vertex Cover and relations to ℓ1 embeddability of Negative Type metrics
We study various SDP formulations for Vertex Cover by adding different constraints to the standard formulation. We rule out approximations better than 2 − O( p log logn/ logn) even when we add the so-called pentagonal inequality constraints to the standard SDP formulation, and thus almost meet the best upper bound known due to Karakostas, of 2 − Ω( p 1/ logn). We further show the surprising fac...
متن کاملInstant Pattern Filtering and Discrimination in a Multilayer Network with Gaussian Distribution of the Connections
This paper was designed to build an artificial multilayer network with the purpose of studying abilities like instant pattern recognition and discrimination where no learning would be required. The relevance refers to: (1) theories about putative biological mechanisms that would support innate perception, (2) technological implementation of faster systems for detection and classification of env...
متن کاملThe Lifted-Cut Relaxation of the Steiner Forest Problem
In this essay we analyze properties of the lifted-cut linear programming relaxation of the Steiner Forest problem introduced by Könemann, Leonardi and Schäfer. We introduce this new formulation and prove some basic properties establishing that it is in fact a valid relaxation and analyzing the integrality gap. We are interested in analyzing the possible half-integrality of this relaxation and c...
متن کاملSolving integer programs over monotone inequalities in three variables: A framework for half integrality and good approximations
We define a class of monotone integer programs with constraints that involve up to three variables each. A generic constraint in such integer program is of the form ax by6 zþ c, where a and b are nonnegative and the variable z appears only in that constraint. We devise an algorithm solving such problems in time polynomial in the length of the input and the range of variables U. The solution is ...
